About Equanimity Education

Equanimity Education CIC was set up in 2015 as a response to the governmental austerity measures which were imposing further hardship on those already struggling. Our intention is to address barriers to learning for children and young people so that they can flourish in society. In essence a holistic approach to learning by nourishing body, mind and soul – Nourish to Flourish

Nourish to Flourish has become our pervading principle. Our approach manifests itself through programmes which entail; fun learning and tuition (mind), nourishing meals, snacks and drinks (body); and a mentoring component (soul). The programmes are open to all children in the local area where the programme is being run (Birmingham UK). We aim to bring local people together through the universal unifiers of food and stories.

We have ensured that the food aspect of the programme is well integrated with the learning part: continually being mindful of the children's dignity. Equanimity believes that children must have their basic needs met before any meaningful learning can be achieved.

We encourage reading for pleasure and independent thinking and learning.

In addition to running the 'Nourish to Flourish' programmes we undertake research into related issues that affect children. We have focused on research into child hunger/food insecurity/food poverty amongst children, commissioned by the University of Birmingham under the USE-IT! project.
